Music Slideshow: Pag Di Saanjh (A Tribute to the Sikh Turban)

Posted by on Nov 5, 2010 in Featured, Music Slideshows | 0 comments

Regardless of whether you are a Sikh who wears a turban, a Sikh who doesn’t wear one, or are simply curious about why the turban is so important to the Sikh identity and cannot simply be taken off at will, here is a music slideshow of a poem I wrote with English subtitles set to my voice and images, conveying my thoughts on the matter. As always, please leave me a comment if you have anything to say.

Music Slideshow: Dheeaan – Daughters

I wrote the first version of ‘Dheeaan’ after listening to Noor Jahan’s beautiful rendition of the popular Pakistani war song “Eh Puttar Hattan te Nahi Wikde” meaning “Our sons cannot be bought in the marketplace.” But as melodic as Noor Jehan’s voice was, or how much I loved its tune, the tone and message of the song always irked me because of what was left unsaid. Music Slideshow: Umber Di Shehzadi (To the Princess of the Skies)

I wrote Umber Di Shehzadi – Princess of the Skies, a poem about space colonization, 41 years ago. Back then, people thought this was something in a science fiction novel or movie (they also thought the same of Neil Armstrong landing on the moon!). Space Colonization may happen within my lifetime, who knows? But before we jump up and clap our hands at this so-called progress, we should pause and think about what we are doing to the planet we live in, before colonizing other worlds. I recently created this moving image slideshow set to images and my voice. If you are interested in learning more about the story behind this kavita (poem), please read my Kavita Di Kahani blog here.

Photo Slideshow: Punjabi Folksong With Rajasthani Twist

In 2007, my son and daughter-in-law took a six month backpacking trip through India. As it happened, I was giving a public reading (Rubaroo) of my collection of poetry, “Diwa Bale Samundron Paar” at the Punjabi Sahit Kala Bhavan in Chandigarh during that time so we decided to take a short family trip to Rajasthan where neither my wife nor I had been before. We went to a remote area in Bikaner and went on an overnight camel safari. It was fun spending time with them and it was also fun to sing a traditional Punjabi song with some local Rajasthani musicians at the night camp. Here is a slideshow my son, Navdeep, and my daughter-in-law, Sona, created of that trip. Enjoy!
