August 15 marks India’s Independence Day and August 14th marks Pakistan’s Independence day, from over 200 years of British subjugation, and is celebrated by millions of people around the world. But it is also a day of division. While it is important to celebrate the bright future with hard fought democratic ideals, it is equally important to recognize the sacrifices made by people under a United country, fighting against the British for the rights and freedoms of all people, regardless of religion, caste, gender, creed, that we have today, and continue to fight for.
On my part here is my Punjabi poem dedicated to Independence Day. Paying a tribute to ‘Tiranga’ and all those known and unknown freedom fighters and ordinary people who fought for independence.
ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਿਪਤ
ਝੁਲਦਾ ਰਹੁ ਤਿਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਰ ਉੱਚਾ, ਉਹ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਸਤਾਨ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ।
ਭਾਰਤਵਰਸ਼ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਨ ਹੈਂ ਏਸ਼ੀਆ ਦੀ, ਸਾਡਾ ਮਾਣ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡਾ ਤਾਣ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ।
ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਸੁਬਾਹ ਦੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਜਲਾਲ ਤੇਰਾ, ਲੋਕਰਾਜੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਤਰਜਮਾਨ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ।
ਇੱਕੋ ਕੌਮ ਹੈ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕੌਮ ਤੇਰੀ, ਚਾਹੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ।
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੌਤਮ ਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਜੱਗ ਜਾਣੇ, ਉਹ ਅਸ਼ੋਕ ਮਹਾਨ ਦਾ ਦੇਸ ਵੀ ਏ।
ਬਾਪੂ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਦਾ ਸਬਕ ਵੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਓਥੇ,ਚਾਚੇ ਨਹਿਰੂ ਦਾ ਅਮਨ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਵੀ ਏ।
ਰਾਣੀ ਝਾਂਸੀ, ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਦਾ ਦੇਸ ਵੀ ਉਹ, ਉਨ੍ਹੂੰ ਬੰਦੇ ਬਹਾਦੁਰ ਦਾ ਲੇਸ ਵੀ ਏ।
ਟੋਟੇ ਜਿਗਰ ਦੇ ਜਿੰਨ੍ਹੇਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਕੀਤੇ, ਓਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਸਮੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਦੇਸ ਵੀ ਏ।
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਕਸ਼ ਉਲੀਕੇ ਸੀ ਕੂਕਿਆਂ ਨੇ,*ਪਿੰਗਾਲੀ ਨੇ ਚਿਤਵੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਤੇਰੀ।
ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸੁਭਾਸ਼, ਸਰਾਭਿਆਂ ਨੇਂ, ਗਦਰੀ ਬਾਬਿਆਂ ਘੜੀ ਤਕਦੀਰ ਤੇਰੀ।
ਕਿਨੇਂ ਰਾਂਝਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਨ ਪਾਟੇ, ਵਰ੍ਹੀ ਜਿਸਤਰਾਂ ਵਾਰਸਾ ਹੀਰ ਤੇਰੀ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਹਥੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਮ ਤੈਨੂੰ, ਕੱਟੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਖੀਰ ਜ਼ੰਜੀਰ ਤੇਰੀ।
ਚਿੱਟਾ ਹਰਾ ਤੇ ਕੇਸਰੀ ਰੰਗ ਤਿਨੇ,ਇਹ ਸੁਮੇਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੱਚਿਆਂ ਲਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ।
ਧਰਮ ਚੱਕਰ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਮਨੂੱਖਤਾ ਦਾ, ਰਵਾਦਾਰ ਜੋ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ।
ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰ ਤੂੰ ਮਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੁਨਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ, ਦੇਣਦਾਰ ਹੈਂ ਕੁੱਲੀਆਂ ਢਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ।
ਤੀਜੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਉਮੀਦ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ,ਚਾਰਾਸਾਜ਼ ਤੁੰ ਬਣੀਂ ਬੇਚਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ।
* ਪਿੰਗਾਲੀ ਵੈਨਕਈਆ ਨੇ ਝੰਡਿਆਂ ਦੀ ੫ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਪਿਛੋਂ ੧੯੨੧ ਵਿਚ ਤਿਰੰਗੇ ਦਾ ਮੁਢਲਾ ਡੀਜ਼ਾਈਨ ਮਹਾਤਮਾ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਸੀ।
